키아로스쿠로 (chiaroscuro)

‘키아스쿠로’는 ‘명암법’을 뜻하는데,

이탈리아어로 ‘밝다(chiaro)’와 ‘어둡다(oscuro)’의 합성어다.
기록에 의하면 서양에선,

기원전 5세기말 그리스 아테네 출신의 학자 아폴로도스가 음영법을 창안했다고 한다.
명암법이 사실적이고 과학적인 명암처리가 시작한 때는,

15세기 르네상스가 도래하면서 부터고,

16세기 매너리즘 시기에 또렷해졌고,

17세기 바로크 시대로 넘어오면서 극단적인 상황이 된다.
어두운 부분을 세밀하게 표현하기 보다는,

검은색 일색으로 표현하여 극적인 대비로 명암을 처리하는 테크닉을,

‘테네브리즘(tenebrism)’으로 따로 구분한다.
오늘날 키아로스쿠로는 단순한 명암법을 의미하기,

보단 테네브리즘으로 이해되곤 한다.
