헤라드 반 혼토르스트 (Gerard van Honthorst, 1592-1656)

Gerard van Honthorst - Self-portrait

제릿 반 혼토르스트(Gerrit van Honthorst)로도 불리는 헤라드 반 혼토르스트(Gerard van Honthorst)는,

1592년 위트레흐트에서 태어났다.
처음에는 위트레흐트에서 아브라함 블루마르트(Abraham Bloemaert, 1566-1651) 밑에서 공부했다.
1610년경 이탈리아로 가서 상류층 귀족들의 후원을 받았으며,

사실주의적이며 인공조명을 극적으로 사용하는 카라바노의 기법을 모방하여 개성적인 화풍으로 발전시켰다.

 

이탈리아에 머무르는 동안 그린 중요작품으로,

‘세례자 요한의 참수’, ‘로마 산타마리델리스칼라 교회’, ‘만찬’, ‘제사장 앞에 선 예수’ 등이 있다.
1620년 네덜란드로 귀국하여 루벤스가 그의 집을 방문했던 1627년까지 위트레흐트에 머물렸다.
1625-26년까지 위트레흐트 성 루가 길드의 장로로 지냈으며,

1628년에는 런던의 찰스 1세 왕궁에서 활동한 바 있으며,

이후 주로 헤이그에서 지내다가 1652년 이후로 고향인 위트레흐트에서 살았다.

 

혼토르스트는 장식화와 천장화도 남겼지만,

네덜란드 회화에 기여한 그의 가장 큰 업적은,

테르브뤼헨과 함께 위트레흐트에서 카라바조풍의 회화를 주도했다.
렘브란트가 초기에 카라바조풍을 사용한 것은 대체로 그가 혼트로스트의 그림에 정통한 데에서 비롯되었다.
그의 동생인 빌렘 반 혼토르스트(Willem van Honthorst, 1594–1666)도,

뛰어난 화가로 그들은 때때로 공동으로 그림을 그리기도 했다.
