Jacob Jordaens - Self Portrait with Parents, Brothers and Sisters, c1615

페테르 파울 루벤스, 안소니 반 다이크와 함께 17세기 플랑드르를 대표하는 세 명의 화가 중 한명이지만,

앞의 두 사람보다 우리에게 덜 알려져 있다.
다른 화가와 달리 이탈리아 비유학파로 초상화와 신화화, 동물화도 많이 남기고 있으며,
태피스트리도 많이 남기고 있다.
안트베르펜에서 출생하여 사망했다.
1607년 안트베르펜의 화가조합에 견습 화가로 가입하여 1615년 수장(首長)이 되었고,

이듬해 스승인 아담 판 노르트 (Adam van Noort, 1562-1641)의 딸과 결혼하였다.
16살이나 연장인 루벤스와 형제겸 제자의 되어 그의 영향을 받았다.
프로테스탄트로 개종한 후에도 가톨릭을 위한 제단화도 계속 제작했다.
