Charles Ginner - Evening, Dieppe

 

프랑스 남부 칸에서 영국인 의사인 이삭 벤자민 기너의

둘째 아들로 태어난 찰스 기너는

1910년 부모와 함께 런던에 정착하였다.
가족의 반대를 무릅쓰고

1904년부터 파리의 아카데미 비티와 에콜 드 보자르에서

회화와 건축을 공부하였다.

1908년 후기 인상주의

특히 반 고흐와 고갱의 작품세계를 따르면서

독자적인 작품 활동을 시작했다.
1909년 부에노스아리에스에서 전시회를 개최함으로써

후기 인상주의를 아르헨티나에 소개하였다.
1910년 전친한 친구인 해럴드 길먼과

스펜서 고어의 설득으로 런전에 정착했으며,

이들과 함께 피츠로이 거리에 있는 시커트의 작업실에

자주 모였던 엥포르멜 미술가 그룹의 일원이 되었다.
1911년 캠던타운 그룹의 회원이 되었고,

1913년에는 런던 그룹에 가입하였다.
1914년 길먼과 함께 인상주의와 신인상주의에 대한 당시의 해석에 반대하여

후에 네오 리얼리즘으로 명명되는 회화 방식을 촉진시켰으며,

창조적인 미술은 마땅히 미술가가 자연을 깊이 탐구해서 얻은,

물감으로의 객관적인 전환에서 나와야 한다고 주장하였다.

기너는 ‘더 뉴 에이지(The New Age)’에 게재한

소논문 ‘네오 리얼리즘’에서 자신의 견해를 표명하였는데,

그의 주장은 1914년 구필 갤러리에서

길먼과 함께 열었던 전시회 도록 서문에도 인용되었다.
제1차 세계 대전 동안에는 캐나다 전쟁 기록소에서 일하였고,

제2차 세계 대전 중에는

런던의 피난처 장면과 폭격으로 부서진 건물들을 기록하는 공식 전쟁 미술가로 활동하였다.
1920년 뉴 잉글리시 아트 클럽에 가입하였으며,

1942년에는 왕립 아카데미 준회원으로 선출되었다.

기너는 도시와 거리 장면을 그린 작품으로 유명한데,

그는 이들 작품에서 일반적으로 아름답지 못한 건물들을 즐겨 선택하였으며

벽돌 하나하나를 명확하게 표현하면서도

재미있는 패턴을 강조하고 설정된 장면의 인상과 분위기를 전달하였다.
1953년 대규모 기념전이 영국 예술 진흥회 기획으로 개최되었다.
그의 작품들은 테이트 미술관에 소장 전시되고 있다.
