François-Joseph Navez - A classical beauty

 

브뤼셀 로얄 보자르 아카데미에서 공부했으며,

1812년 겐트 살롱전에서 상을 받으면서

그 상금으로 파리로 가서 신고전주의 화가인 자크 루이스 다비드로부터 그림을 배웠고,

1816년 그의 추방과 함께 브뤼셀로 되돌아왔다.

1817년부터 1822년까지 5년간 이탈리아에서 보내면서

장 오귀스트 도미니크 앵그르의 열렬한 찬미자가 되었다.
신고전주의와 낭만주의 감각에 영향을 받은 그는 브뤼셀로 돌아와

자신이 단순히 초상화가로 여겨짐에 실망하여 새롭게 역사화가로 변신한다.

1835년부터 1859년까지 브뤼셀의 로얄 보자르 아카데미 감독으로 지냈다.
장 프랑소와 포텔스는 그의 제자겸 사위였다.
그는 초상화가 겸 신화적이면서 역사적인 그림을 많이 그렸다.
