클로드 로랭 (Claude Lorrain, 1600-82)

Claude Lorrain - A Seaport at Sunrise, 1674

 

클로드 로랭은 바로크 시대 프랑스의 화가이자 소묘가겸 판화가이다.
그는 생애 대부분의 시간을 이탈리아에서 보냈으며,

네덜란드 회화 황금기의 동시대 화가를 제외하고

풍경화에 집중한 가장 초기의 중요한 화가 중의 한 명이다.
현재는 프랑스 화가로 인식되고 있지만,

실제로는 독립적인 로렌 공국에서 태어났으며,

대부분의 작품은 이탈리아에서 제작하였다.
그의 명성은 로마를 넘어 유럽 각지로 퍼져나갔는데,

로마의 교황 우르바누스 8세와 스페인 국왕 펠리페 4세가 그의 든든한 후원자였다.

19세기 말 이전까지 그는 로마화파 화가로 인식되었다.

후원자도 대부분은 이탈리아인이었으나

사후에는 영국에서 대단한 인기를 얻어서 현재는 영국에 많은 작품이 남아있다.
그는 나폴리에서 고프레도 왈스로부터 처음으로 도제 수업을 받은 후,

아고스티노 타시로부터 그림을 배웠다.
이후 그가 일 년 동안 조수로 일했던 클로드 드뤼에,

그리고 파울 브릴의 작품으로부터도 영향을 받았다.
그는 현실과 이상을 결합시켜 독창적인 균형과 조화를 지닌 풍경을 창조해 냄으로써

풍경화 양식에 새로운 형식을 도입시켰다.
그의 풍경화는 적은 수의 인물이 첨부되어,

주로 성경이나 고전 신화의 장면을 묘사하는 더욱 격조 높은 역사화로 전환시켰다.
그는 특히 빛의 인상적인 사용과 광택이 나는 채색으로 유명하다.

광택이 나는 채색은 얇고 반투명한 물감층을 여러 겹으로 쌓아 그림의 표면을 구성하는 기법을 개발했다.
