파울루스 포터 (Paulus Potter, 1625-54)

Bartholomeus van der Helst - Portrait of Paulus Potter, 1654

엔크호이젠 출생. 화가의 아들로 태어나 일찍이 아버지에게 그림을 배웠다.

1646년 델프트의 화가조합원이 되고,

1649년 헤이그로 옮겨 다음해 그곳에서 건축가의 딸과 결혼하였으나,

1652년 다시 암스테르담으로 이주하여

2년 후 29세의 젊은 나이로 그곳에서 죽었다.

그는 당시 네덜란드의 전통화풍인 풍경화의 전통 속에서 그림을 익혀

점차 야외에서 떼지어 다니는 양 ·소 ·말 등 가축들을 주요 테마로 한 그림에

독특한 개성을 발휘하여 하나의 독립된 동물화의 장르를 확립하였다.

화풍은 리얼리스트로서의 성실성과 예리한 관찰력,

그리고 섬세한 감성을 가지고 목초지(牧草地)에서 노는 가축들의 생태를 생동감 넘치게 묘사하였는데,

특히 공간형성(空間形成)보다도 색채의 조화에 뛰어나,

태양광선의 효과를 살리는 데 재능을 보여 밝은 풍경의 분위기를 잘 살렸다.

묘사의 필치는 너무나 사실적이며 섬세하여

마치 사진을 대하는 듯한 인상을 풍긴다.

판화도 유화와 마찬가지 경향을 띠었다.
