고 했다.
네덜란드의 화가겸 제도사, 수집가였던 그는,

안트베르펜에서 출생했으며,

암스테르담에서 사망했다.
그의 작품들은 매너리즘에서 초기 바로크 풍경을 보여준다.

코닌슬루는 안트워프 매너리즘 학교의 화가인 피터 코크 반 아엘스트 밑에서 공부했다.

프랑스에서 일정 기간 여행을 한 뒤

1570년 앤트워프로 돌아와 화가 길드의 일원으로 활동했다.

종교 박해를 피해 1585년 집을 떠나 1595년까지는 팔라틴 프랑켄탈에,

1595년부터 사망할때까지 암스테르담에 머물렀다.
프랑켄달에서 그는 현재 프랑켄달 학교라고 알려진 에밀리그램 플레미시 풍경 화가들에게 결정적인 영향을 끼쳤다.
코닌슬루 스타일의 발전은

앤트워프(1570-88),

프랑켄탈(1588-95),

암스테르담(1595-1606) 세 시기로 나눠 기술된다.

그의 초기 작품들은 이탈리아계 플레미쉬 조경가 폴 브릴(Paul Bril)의 영향을 반영하여,

의도적으로 구성된 환상적인 풍경을 담고 있다.

코닌슬로의 후기 풍경화들은 더욱 자연스러우며 색채가 조화로운 게 특징이다.

네덜란드와 플레미쉬의 풍경화 발전에 길리스의 공헌은 결정적이다.

그는 어느 예술가보다도 현실에 바탕을 둔

자연의 해석에 영웅적 풍경을 표현하여 경치를 이상화하는 성향을 지니고 있다.

전임자들이 광활한 풍경을 그리는 동안

코닌슬로는 로맨틱하면 환상적인 풍경화로

인간과 자연은 물론 풍경과 관람자 사이의 일체감을 만들어냈다.
