빌렘 칼프 (Willem Kalf, 1616-93)

Willem Kalf - A courtyard scene with washerwomen

 

네덜란드 로테르담의 귀족가문 출신으로

그의 아버지는 의류상인인 동시에 시의회 의원이었다.

하를럼의 헨드리크 게리츠 포트를 사사하였으며,

생애 후반에는 미술상 겸 감정사로도 활동했다.

1640년부터 1653년 암스테르담에 정착하기 전까지 파리에 체류하면서

주로 실내의 소박한 인테리어와 정물을 주제로 그림을 그렸다.

네덜란드로 돌아온 뒤에는 렘브란트의 영향을 받았다.

어두운 색조를 배경으로 정교한 은식기와 유리그릇,

특히 동양의 도자기를 모티브로 배치한 색체적 매력에 찬 정물화에 뛰어난 재능을 보였다.

그의 작품에 등장하는 이국적인 물건은

중국의 청화백자, 터키산 양탄자,

가장자리와 손잡이가 멋지게 장식된 베네치아산 유리잔,

지중해산 배, 네덜란드의 물결문양의 은쟁반 등

보는 이의 시선을 자극한다.

이처럼 호화로운 칼프의 정물화는

당시 암스테르담의 부유층으로부터 큰 인기를 얻었다.

부유층은 칼프의 정물화를 거실에 장식함으로써

자신들의 부를 과시하면서 이국적인 기호도 충족시켰다.

그의 정물화가 인기를 끈 것은 이국적인 물건들을 그렸기 때문만은 아니었다.

렘브란트의 영향으로

사물들을 어둠속에서 빛을 발하는 존재로 묘사했기 때문이다.
