히에로니무스 반 케셀이란 이름을 가진 할아버지와 아버지도 작품이 전해지지 않지만 화가였고,
삼촌과 형제, 그리고 자식들도 화가였다.
그의 어머니가 파사시아 브뤼휄(Paschasia Brueghel)은,
당대 유명한 화가였던 얀 브뤼휄(Jan Brueghel the Elder)의 딸로 외가 역시 유명한 화가집안이었다.
화가집안 일원으로 자연스럽게 그림을 배웠으며,
그의 나이 18살인 1644년 세인트루크의 앤트워프 길드의 회원이 되었다.
이름 또한 동명이인이 많은데 아들 중 한 명도 얀 반 카셀이고,
앤트워프에서 정물화를 그리던 얀 반 카셀,
암스테르담에서 풍경화를 그리던 얀 반 카셀도 있어서 이름만으로도 헷갈리는 화가다.
정물을 포함해서 곤충, 풍경, 신화와 성서의 장면 등 다양한 장르를 소화한 화가로 특히,
동식물에 대해서는 예리한 관찰과 세심하고 정확한 표현으로 명성을 떨쳤다.
