포엘렌부르흐는 우트레흐트에서 아브라함 블로이메르트 밑에서 훈련을 받았지만,

그의 예술에 가장 극적인 영향을 미친 것은 젊은 시절 오랫동안 이탈리아를 방문한 경험이었다.

그는 1618년과 1621년 사이에 플로렌스의 코시모 2세 데 메디치 대공(1590-1621년)이 역임하는 동안인,

1617년부터 1625년까지 주로 로마에 있었다.

이 기간 동안 골동품과 이탈리아 르네상스에서부터,

로마 시대의 동료 예술가인 아담 엘시머(1578-1610)와,

폴 브릴(1554-1626)과 같은 예술가의 작품으로부터 광범위한 영향을 받았다.

로마에 있는 동안,

그는 1620년부터 약 1세기 동안 계속됐던 로마에서 활동했던 네덜란드인과,

플리미쉬 예술가들의 모임인 벤트뷰겔이나 실더르벤트의 창립 멤버가 되었다.

포엘렌부르흐는 1626년 우트레흐트로 돌아와,

우트레흐트의 공주인 아말리아 반 솔름(1602-75)을 위한 그림을 그려 달라는 의뢰를 받음으로써,

이 지역의 대표적인 예술가 중 한 명이 되었다.

이 위원회와 그로 인해 포엘렌 버치가 큰 보조 스튜디오를 만들 수 있게 되었고,

그는 곧 큰 성공과 인기를 얻었다.

그의 종교적, 신화적인 장면들은,

우트레흐트 및 그 밖의 지역에서 궁중하게 후원하는 사람들과 개인 수집가들에 의해 열렬히 요구되었다.

1638년 포엘렌부르흐는 4년 동안 재직했던,

찰스 1세(1600~1649)의 궁중 예술가로 일하도록 영국의 초청을 받는다.

이것으로 보아 네덜란드 골든 에이지 화가 중에서,

국제적인 명성을 얻은 몇 안 되는 네덜란드 화가들 중 한 명임을 입증한다.
